🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture

In Germany, residence permits are usually handled by the immigration office of the town or city where you live. The name can vary a little from place to place, and in big cities appointments (Termin) can be hard to get, so start early.

People often bring their passport, a biometric photo (biometrisches Foto), their registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung) and proof of health insurance. What you need depends on your reason for staying and on the city, so always check the office's own list.

The golden rule: apply for an extension before your permit runs out. Bringing a copy of every document can save you a second trip, too. 📂
