Verbs and their prepositions: 10 pairs to learn together

If you've been saying Ich warte für den Bus, today's the day to fix it.

You're proud of your German sentence, but your German friend grins and corrects you: "Nicht für den Bus, auf den Bus!" In English it's ‘wait for’, so why auf? Because many German verbs come with their own partner preposition.

Today's ten verbs all have a fixed preposition. Learn each verb and its preposition as one chunk, and your German will sound far more natural — and you'll lose fewer marks in exams. Let's match up the pairs! 🔗

🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture

Ask a German almost anything and you may well hear "Das hängt davon ab" — or, more casually, "Kommt drauf an." It reflects a conversational habit of weighing up the conditions rather than giving a flat yes or no.

At work, "Ich kümmere mich darum" is a reassuring thing to hear. It means ‘I'll handle it’, and people expect you to follow through.

Friends sometimes say "Pass auf dich auf!" (Take care of yourself!) when saying goodbye. Today's verbs are hiding in everyday farewells too! 🔗

✅ Quick quiz

Q. A friend asks if you're coming to the barbecue on Saturday. How do you say ‘It depends on the weather’?

  1. ① Das hängt vom Wetter ab.
  2. ② Ich warte für das Wetter.
  3. ③ Ich interessiere mich in das Wetter.
Show the answer

① Das hängt vom Wetter ab.
abhängen von + dative = to depend on; the other two use the wrong preposition (it should be auf and für).

Read today's ten verbs aloud as chunks — warten auf, sich kümmern um … — with a bit of rhythm. Never split up the pairs! 🎶
