🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture
Germany has been a country of immigration for a long time. From the 1950s to the 1970s, many ‘Gastarbeiter’ (guest workers) came from countries such as Italy, Greece and Turkey, and their children and grandchildren are now an important part of German society.
Integration courses (Integrationskurs) teach German along with everyday life, history and politics in Germany. Who can take part and what support is available depends on your residence situation, so it's best to ask your local foreigners' office (Ausländerbehörde).
Some people now prefer expressions like ‘Einwanderungsgeschichte’ (immigration history) instead of Migrationshintergrund. It's a topic where word choice matters. 🤝
