Sorting it out: 10 German words for the environment

There's a reason German kitchens have four bins instead of one.
On your first day in a German flat, you find a whole row of bins in the kitchen. Where does the yoghurt pot go? The pizza box? Your flatmate grins: "Wir trennen hier den Müll!" Then you switch on the news and it's all Umwelt and nachhaltig.
Today's ten words come up in every conversation about the environment. With them you can follow the recycling rules, read the headlines and talk green with your friends. 🌱

🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture
Sorting rubbish (Mülltrennung) is part of everyday life in Germany. You'll usually split it into paper, packaging (Gelbe Tonne or Gelber Sack), food waste (Biomüll) and everything else (Restmüll). Bin colours and the finer rules vary from town to town, so check your building's notice when you move in.
Glass goes into street containers, sorted into white, green and brown. Signs often ask you not to use them at night or on Sundays because of the noise. Bottles with a deposit (Pfand) go back to the supermarket instead.
And the word nachhaltig comes from 18th-century German forestry: the idea of only cutting as many trees as can grow back. That idea became the root of ‘sustainability’ worldwide. 🌲
