03

echt

[EKHT]real, genuine

📌 Ist das echtes Gold?

→ Is that real gold?

💡 Echt?! = Seriously?! 🤯 Among friends it's even more common than wirklich.

Bonus As a booster: echt gut = really good · echt schlimm = really bad

04

aha

[a-HA]aha, I see (colloquial)

📌 Aha, so funktioniert das also!

→ Aha, so that's how it works!

💡 The sound of a light bulb switching on in your head 💡 Same as English!

Bonus Its best friend: Ach so! = Oh, I see!

05

toll

[TOLL]great, terrific

(toll – toller – am tollsten)

📌 Das ist eine tolle Idee!

→ That's a great idea!

💡 It used to mean ‘mad’ — madly good = great 🤩

⚠ Said sarcastically, Na toll! means ‘Oh, great…’ — the opposite.

06

schade

[SHAH-duh]a pity, a shame

📌 Schade, dass du nicht kommen kannst.

→ What a pity you can't come.

Bonus More dramatic: Ach du meine Güte! = Oh my goodness!

09

naja

[na-YA]well; oh well (colloquial)

📌 Naja, der Film war ganz okay, aber nicht super.

→ Well, the film was quite OK, but not great.

Bonus You'll see it written naja or na ja.

10

keine Ahnung

[KY-nuh AH-noong]no idea

📌 Wo ist mein Handy? – Keine Ahnung!

→ Where's my phone? – No idea!

💡 No Ahnung (inkling) at all = no idea 🤷 Shrug while you say it!

⚠ It's casual. To be polite: Das weiß ich leider nicht.

🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture

Talk to Germans for a while and you'll hear Genau everywhere. It's a reaction, but people also use it as a filler when wrapping up a thought: ‘Genau, also…’. It sounds funny at first — then you catch yourself doing it.

German reactions tend to be honest. If someone answers ‘Naja’ or ‘Geht so’, they really mean it was just okay. On the other hand, ‘Nicht schlecht!’ is often bigger praise than it sounds.

And at many universities, students knock on their desks at the end of a lecture instead of clapping. It's startling the first time, but it's a very German way of saying thank you. 👏
