Boxes, tape and paperwork: 10 German words for moving house

When you move house in Germany, the heaviest thing to carry might be the vocabulary.
You've signed for a new flat! The excitement lasts until the empty boxes pile up and you need to text a friend in German: ‘Can you help me move on Saturday?’ And once you've moved, there's the trip to register your new address.
Today's ten words take you through the whole move: packing, carrying boxes, booking a removal company, unpacking and registering your new address. 📦

🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture
After moving in Germany you usually have to register your new address at the local citizens' office (Bürgeramt) within about two weeks. You'll need a confirmation from your landlord (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). In big cities appointments can be hard to get, so plan ahead.
Friends often help each other move, and it's normal to thank them with pizza and drinks. People hire a van for the day, or book an Umzugsfirma if there's a lot to shift.
One thing that surprises many newcomers: rented flats in Germany don't always come with a kitchen. Before you sign, check whether there's an Einbauküche (fitted kitchen). 🍳
