🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture

Compared with many countries, lots of people in Germany rent for their whole lives. Tenants' rights are taken seriously, and open-ended rental contracts are common.

In popular cities a flat viewing (Wohnungsbesichtigung) can mean many people turning up at once. Landlords often ask for a credit report (Schufa-Auskunft) and proof of income, so it helps to have them ready.

When you read a flat advert, always check whether the price is Kaltmiete or Warmmiete. There's usually a deposit (Kaution) on top. 🔑

✅ Quick quiz

Q. You're looking at a flat advert. How do you ask whether the price includes utilities?

  1. ① Ist das die Hypothek?
  2. ② Wer ist der Makler?
  3. ③ Ist das die Warmmiete?
Show the answer

③ Ist das die Warmmiete?
Warmmiete is rent including utilities, so this is the right question.

Think of your own home and say out loud: Meine Miete ist … and Mein Vermieter ist … Next time Wohnungsmarkt comes up in the news, you'll catch it! 🏠
