🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture

Germans often draw a clear line between a Freund and a Bekannter. Colleagues you have the odd beer with are usually Bekannte; Freund tends to be saved for people who are really close.

That can feel a bit distant at first, but once you're friends, it often lasts. Joining a club (Verein) — for sport, music or almost any hobby — is a classic way to make friends in Germany.

Friends almost always call each other du. When someone suggests switching from Sie to du, it's a sign you're getting closer. 🍻

✅ Quick quiz

Q. You want to introduce a male friend without any confusion. What do you say?

  1. ① Das ist mein Freund.
  2. ② Das ist ein Freund von mir.
  3. ③ Das ist meine Freundschaft.
Show the answer

② Das ist ein Freund von mir.
ein Freund von mir means ‘a friend of mine’, so nobody thinks he's your boyfriend.

Think of a good friend and say Ich kann mich auf dich verlassen. out loud — or better, send it to them! 💌
