Pass with flying colours: 10 German exam words

A1A2B1B2

You can study for a German exam for months and still never learn the German words for exams.

The day I registered for my B1 exam, I got stuck on the form. I knew Prüfung, but what was a Klausur? And what's the difference between a Zertifikat and a Zeugnis? Waiting for the results, I was only scanning the email for one word: bestanden.

Today's ten words are all about exams and certificates. With them you can talk about revising, share good news, and understand a German report card. Here's to bestanden! 📝

📋 The ten words at a glance

  1. die Prüfung — exam, test
  2. bestehen — to pass (an exam); to exist
  3. durchfallen — to fail (an exam)
  4. die Note — grade, mark; (musical) note
  5. das Zeugnis — report (card); certificate, reference
  6. das Zertifikat — certificate
  7. die Klausur — (written) exam, test
  8. sich vorbereiten — to prepare (for) (auf + acc.)
  9. das Ergebnis — result
  10. die Prüfungsangst — exam anxiety, exam nerves

🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture

German school grades are numbers: 1 (sehr gut) is the best and 6 (ungenügend) the worst, and 4 is usually still a pass. So if a friend says ‘Ich hab eine Eins!’, congratulate them!

To prove your German, people often use certificates from Goethe, telc or TestDaF. Which exam and level you need depends on where it's for — a visa, a university or an employer — so check before you book.

When you leave a job in Germany you usually get an Arbeitszeugnis. It sounds like praise from start to finish, but the exact wording is said to carry hidden grades, so Germans read it very carefully. 🧐
