🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture

Germany is famous for its huge variety of bread: rye, wholegrain, loaves packed with seeds — every bakery counter is full. German bread culture is even listed in the country's inventory of intangible cultural heritage.

The word for a bread roll changes with the region. Brötchen is the general word, but in Bavaria and Austria it's Semmel, in Berlin Schrippe, and in the south-west Weck or Weckle.

In many homes, dinner is a simple Abendbrot: bread with cheese, cold meats and vegetables instead of a hot meal. Lots of families eat their warm meal at lunchtime. 🧀
