🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture
German stations have no ticket barriers. Instead, staff check tickets on the train (Fahrkartenkontrolle). Riding without a ticket means a fine, so always buy one before you board.
On the ICE, reservations are optional, so you can sit in any free seat. But if the display above a seat shows it's reserved for part of the route, you'll need to move when that person gets on. For peace and quiet, look for the Ruhebereich (quiet zone).
German trains are also fairly often late. If your connection is tight, leave extra time, and check the coach order (Wagenreihung) on the platform display before the train comes in. 🧳
