🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture
Germans keep Burg and Schloss quite separate. A Burg is usually a medieval castle built on a hill for defence. A Schloss is a later, palace-like residence built for nobles to live in comfort.
The most famous of all, Schloss Neuschwanstein, isn't medieval at all. It was built in the 19th century by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who loved tales of medieval knights and built his dream in stone.
Along the Rhine and the Moselle you'll see one castle or ruin after another. Many interiors can only be visited on a guided tour (Führung), so check tour times before you go. 🗺️
