How to use it
States that something naturally or inevitably happens — a general truth or common sense, not a one-time event.
Forming it
| 실수하다 | → 실수하기 마련이다 |
| 잊어버리다 | → 잊어버리기 마련이다 |
| 있다 | → 있기 마련이다 |
Not for one specific event or a plan: ✗ 내일 친구가 오기 마련이에요. No past tense before 기: ✗ 실수했기 마련이에요.
Examples
누구나 처음에는 실수하기 마련이에요.
Everyone makes mistakes at first.
시간이 지나면 다 잊어버리기 마련이에요.
As time passes, you naturally forget everything.
Compared with similar patterns
-는 법이다 (G5-031) is very similar but more formal and proverb-like. -(으)ㄹ 게 뻔하다 (G4-014) predicts the outcome of a specific situation.
