Korean grammar patterns › Level 4
-(으)ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ 만큼
as much as, to the degree that; since (given that it is so)
Level 4 · TOPIK II · intermediate
How to use it
Shows an amount or degree equal to clause 1: 먹을 만큼 'as much as you'll eat', 노력한 만큼 'as much as you worked'. With A-(으)ㄴ / V-는 / N인 만큼 it can also give a reason ('since, as'), mostly in formal speech: 중요한 시험인 만큼 준비를 잘하세요.
Forming it
| 먹다 | → 먹을 만큼 |
| 노력하다 | → 노력한 만큼 |
| 원하다 | → 원하는 만큼 |
| 언니 | → 언니만큼 |
Adjectives take -(으)ㄴ, not -는: ✗ 필요하는 만큼 → 필요한 만큼. After a noun, 만큼 is a particle written together: 언니만큼.
Examples
음식은 먹을 만큼만 접시에 담으세요.
Only put as much food on your plate as you'll eat.
열심히 노력한 만큼 좋은 결과가 있을 거예요.
You'll get good results in proportion to how hard you've worked.
