-(으)ㄴ/는지/(으)ㄹ지

whether, if; what/where/when … (embedded question)

Level 2 · TOPIK I · beginner

How to use it

Turns a question into part of a sentence, before verbs like 알다, 모르다, 궁금하다, 물어보다, 알려 주다. Often with question words (뭐, 어디, 언제, 왜, 몇).

Forming it

가다→ 가는지
비싸다→ 비싼지
학생→ 학생인지
오다→ 올지

Written without a space: 가는지. Don't confuse it with -(으)ㄴ 지 'since' (with a space): 한국에 온 지 1년. Adjectives take -(으)ㄴ지 (✗ 비싸는지).

Examples

Compared with similar patterns

-(으)ㄹ 줄 알다 means 'know how to'; -(으)ㄹ까요? is a direct question, while -(으)ㄹ지 puts it inside a sentence (갈지 모르겠어요).
