🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture

Most German public transport has no ticket barriers. Instead, plain-clothes inspectors check tickets at random. Riding without one is called Schwarzfahren, and getting caught means a hefty fine.

In some cities a paper ticket only becomes valid once you stamp it in a machine (entwerten). If there's no date and time on it, it can count as no ticket at all — so check before you board.

Many people now buy tickets in an app, and lots of commuters use the Deutschlandticket, a subscription for local and regional transport across the country. 🎫
