A lot, a little, just enough: 10 German words for how much

A1A2B1

One tiny word can turn ‘just a little’ into ‘a mountain of it’.

You're at the deli counter in a German supermarket. You only want a little ham, and the assistant asks „Wie viel darf's sein?“ You show a vague thickness with your fingers — and get a mountain of ham.

Today's ten words are small but mighty: words for quantity and degree. A lot, a little, enough, almost, at least… With these, everything from shopping to saying how long something takes gets much more precise. ⚖️

📋 The ten words at a glance

  1. viel — much, many, a lot
  2. wenig — little, few
  3. sehr — very
  4. ein bisschen — a little, a bit
  5. ein paar — a few, a couple of
  6. genug — enough
  7. ziemlich — quite, fairly, rather
  8. fast — almost, nearly
  9. ungefähr — approximately, about
  10. mindestens — at least

01

viel

[FEEL]much, many, a lot

(viel – mehr – am meisten)

02

wenig

[VAY-nikh]little, few

(wenig – weniger – am wenigsten)

03

sehr

[ZAIR]very

(adverb)

📌 Vielen Dank, das ist sehr nett!

→ Thank you, that's very kind!

💡 Related to sore — it once meant ‘painfully’ 💯 so ‘very’!

Bonus Sehr gut! = Very good!

04

ein bisschen

[ine BISS-khen]a little, a bit

(= bisschen, bissel)

📌 Ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch.

Bonus In the south people say a bissl.

⚠ bisschen is written lowercase.

05

ein paar

[ine PAAR]a few, a couple of

📌 Ich bleibe ein paar Tage in Wien.

→ I'm staying in Vienna for a few days.

⚠ It never changes: mit ein paar Freunden

06

genug

[guh-NOOK]enough

ungefähr

[OON-guh-fair]approximately, about

📌 Die Fahrt dauert ungefähr zwei Stunden.

→ The journey takes about two hours.

💡 Shrug and say OON-guh-fair 🤷 It comes from an old phrase meaning ‘without trickery’.

Bonus etwa means the same: etwa zwei Stunden

10

mindestens

[MIN-dess-tens]at least

📌 Das dauert mindestens eine Stunde.

→ That takes at least an hour.

💡 mindest (least) + -ens ⏳ Starts with m, like minimum!

🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture

At the meat and cheese counter (Theke) in German supermarkets, you usually order by weight: „200 Gramm, bitte.“ If the slicing goes a bit over, the assistant will almost always ask „Darf's ein bisschen mehr sein?“ — is a little more okay?

In Germany, if someone offers „Möchtest du noch etwas?“ and you say „Nein, danke“, they'll usually take you at your word. People rarely insist two or three times, so if you'd like more, just say „Ja, gern, ein bisschen!“ straight away. 🍰
