🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture
You'll need material words to sort your rubbish in Germany. In many places paper (Papier) goes in the blue bin, and plastic (Kunststoff) or metal (Metall) packaging goes in the yellow bag or bin. The rules vary a little from city to city, so check the notice in your building when you move in.
Walk through an old town and you'll often see half-timbered houses (Fachwerkhaus), with their wooden frames on show. Built from wood, clay and stone, they make whole streets look like a fairy tale.
And if a German friend knocks on the table and says „Toi, toi, toi!“ before your exam or interview, that's Klopf auf Holz in action. They're wishing you luck. 🍀
