🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture

German isn't only spoken in Germany. It's also used in Austria, parts of Switzerland, Liechtenstein and more. Words and accents vary: in Austria a potato can be an Erdapfel.

In German, Land can also mean a federal state. Germany is made up of 16 Bundesländer, and school holidays and some public holidays often differ from state to state.

Most country names have no article, but there are exceptions, like die Schweiz, die Türkei and die USA. So ‘I'm from Switzerland’ is Ich komme aus der Schweiz. 🇨🇭
