🇩🇪 A spoonful of German culture

Germans send a lot of voice messages (Sprachnachrichten). Some people love how easy they are, others can't stand long ones, so it's a surprisingly divisive topic.

Messages often end with LG (Liebe Grüße) or VG (Viele Grüße). Close friends might write hdl (hab dich lieb). In the north, a simple “Moin!” works as a greeting.

Chats for your building or your child's class are mostly for announcements. People usually keep small talk out, and a quick 👍 is often enough to show you've read an important message.

✅ Quick quiz

Q. You're cycling and can't type. What do you send your friend? “Ich schicke dir ___.”

  1. ① eine Briefmarke
  2. ② eine Sprachnachricht
  3. ③ einen Chatroom
Show the answer

② eine Sprachnachricht
Instead of typing, you send eine Sprachnachricht — a voice message.

Why not post one line in German in a group chat today? Add LG at the end and you'll sound like a local! 📱
