The weeks between late October and New Year are some of the best for visiting Korea. Mountains turn red and gold, the air is crisp, and by December the cities are covered in lights. Here's what to expect, month by month. Dates below are as of October 2026; organisers can change schedules, so check before you travel.

Late October: peak autumn colour

단풍 (danpung), autumn foliage, is the star of the season. Koreans plan weekend trips around it, and hiking trails get busy.

According to the Korea Forest Service's 2026 forecast, colours were expected to peak (around half the leaves turned):

  • Seoraksan (설악산) in Gangwon Province: around 20 October
  • Songnisan (속리산): around 28 October
  • Naejangsan (내장산) in the southwest: around 4 November
  • Hallasan (한라산) on Jeju: around 6 November

Most of the country, including the hills and palaces of Seoul, peaks in late October to early November. Ginkgo trees, which line many Seoul streets, turn bright yellow at about the same time.

In Seoul, the Seoul Silver Grass Festival – 서울억새축제 (Seoul eoksae chukje) – runs at Haneul Park in World Cup Park until 23 October 2026, open 10:00–21:00. 억새 (eoksae) is silver grass, and the hilltop fields glow at sunset.

November: fireworks, kimchi and the big exam

Busan Fireworks Festival – 부산불꽃축제 (Busan bulkkot chukje) – takes place on Saturday 7 November 2026 around Gwangalli Beach, according to the official festival listing. It is one of Korea's biggest fireworks shows, set against the Gwangan Bridge. Expect huge crowds: arrive early, or book paid seating if it's offered. 불꽃놀이 (bulkkonnori) means "fireworks."

Kimjang season. Late autumn is when families make a winter's supply of kimchi together. This tradition, 김장 (gimjang), is on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Some towns hold kimjang festivals where visitors can join in; for example, the Goesan Kimjang Festival in North Chungcheong Province runs 5–8 November 2026.

Suneung day. On Thursday 19 November 2026, high-school seniors sit the national university entrance exam, 수능 (Suneung). It's not a festival, but you'll notice it: the country goes quiet around exam schools, and people take care not to make noise near them. If you see students being cheered outside schools that morning, that's why.

November is also a good month for palace visits and hiking before the real cold arrives. Pack a warm layer: mornings can drop close to freezing by the end of the month.

December: lights, markets and the year-end bell

December brings 연말 (yeonmal), the year-end season, with company dinners, Christmas lights and a festive mood in shopping districts.

Seoul Winter Festa. In recent years, Seoul has run a city-wide winter festival in downtown Seoul. The 2025–26 edition ran from 12 December to 4 January, with light shows at Gwanghwamun Square, a Christmas-style market, an ice rink at Seoul Plaza, and the Seoul Lantern Festival – 서울빛초롱축제 (Seoul bitchorong chukje) – along the Cheonggyecheon stream. As of October 2026, the dates for the 2026–27 edition had not been announced, but a similar mid-December start is likely. Watch the Seoul city website from November.

Christmas in Korea is a public holiday, but it feels more like Valentine's Day: a date night for couples, while New Year's Day is family time. Department stores in central Seoul put on large light displays, and they are free to see.

New Year's Eve. At midnight on 31 December, the great bell at 보신각 (Bosingak) in Jongno is rung 33 times in a ceremony called 제야의 종 (jeyaui jong), the New Year's Eve bell. Crowds fill the streets nearby, so take the subway and expect stations to be busy.

Packing and planning tips

  • Layers: late October can feel like spring at noon and winter at night.
  • Book early for Busan in early November and for anywhere famous for foliage on weekends.
  • Check dates: festival dates are often confirmed only a few weeks ahead.
