"Hyunbaek core": the department-store look young Koreans love
A new style term is circulating on Korean social media: 현백 코어 (Hyeonbaek koeo), or "Hyunbaek core." As reported by the Hankook Ilbo and The Korea Times on October 16, 2026, it is popular with people in their 20s and 30s, and it says a lot about both Korean fashion and Korean slang.
What the name means
현백 (Hyeonbaek) is a shortened form of 현대백화점 (Hyeondae Baekhwajeom) – Hyundai Department Store. 코어 (koeo) comes from English "core," used online for the defining look of a style, as in "ballet core."
So Hyunbaek core describes the image of a wealthy young woman casually browsing a department store, as if shopping were nothing special to her. The look is a kind of quiet luxury: soft, expensive-looking fabrics like silk and cashmere, and no big logos. Compared with the "old money" trend, it is meant to feel more relaxed and less formal.
What makes it unusual is that it is named after a place. Earlier "cores" were usually based on a job or an identity; this one is based on a specific store, helped by Hyundai's flagship The Hyundai Seoul in Yeouido, which has become a hangout for young shoppers. According to figures cited in the report, the share of Hyundai Department Store visitors in their 20s and 30s grew from 37% in 2020 to 46.7% in the first nine months of 2026.
Why it's catching on
Experts quoted in the report link the trend to a feeling that it has become harder to climb the social ladder through hard work alone. One economist said rags-to-riches stories no longer feel convincing to many young people, and a consumer psychologist described the trend as a way of identifying with a group by adopting its style. In other words, Hyunbaek core is about a mood as much as clothes.
The slang lesson: Korean loves to shorten
Hyunbaek follows one of the most common patterns in Korean slang, the 줄임말 (jurimmal) – abbreviation. Take the first syllable of each word and join them:
- 현대 + 백화점 → 현백 (Hyundai Department Store)
- 생일 선물 → 생선 (saengseon) – birthday present (and also the word for "fish," which makes it a popular joke)
- 아이스 아메리카노 → 아아 (a-a) – iced americano
