Kim Ji-won's "Doctor X" climbs toward 20% ratings

SBS's new medical drama Doctor X has become the weekend show to beat. Its fourth episode, which aired on Saturday, October 17, 2026, reached an average of 18.5% nationwide, according to Nielsen Korea, with a peak of 20.8% during the broadcast. That is the series' best result so far, and it topped every miniseries of the week.
A fast climb
The drama premiered on Friday, October 9, with 11.4% – the strongest debut of any Korean miniseries this year. Episode 2 rose to 14.9%, and by episode 4 the show was close to the 20% mark that Korean media treat as a sign of a true national hit. In Korea, TV ratings are called 시청률 (sicheongnyul), and you will see this word in almost every drama headline.
The show airs on Fridays and Saturdays at 9:50 p.m. KST on SBS, and it is also streaming on Netflix in many regions (as of October 2026).
What the drama is about
Doctor X is a Korean remake of the Japanese hit series of the same name. Kim Ji-won plays Gye Su-jeong, a brilliant surgeon who works on her own terms. Placed at a university hospital, she proves her skills in the operating room while exposing the power games and absurd habits of the people running it. Korean coverage describes the genre as "medical noir": a hospital drama with the tension of a thriller.
In episode 4, Su-jeong saves a patient in urgent need of a transfusion, notices that a hospital cleaner is unwell before anyone else does, and openly criticizes senior professors who make excuses for not showing up. Jang Seung-jo joins the story as Na Dae-il, a surgeon whose cool rivalry with Su-jeong is building up as one of the main threads. Lee Jung-eun and Son Hyun-joo also star.
Why it matters for learners
Medical dramas are a great way to pick up practical Korean. Words like 병원 (byeongwon) – hospital, 응급실 (eungeupsil) – emergency room and 수술 (susul) – surgery come up in every episode, and they are just as useful if you ever need a doctor in Korea. Listen for the polite, formal speech between doctors and patients, and the much rougher casual speech between rivals.
