-건대

How to use it

Attaches to a few verbs of seeing, hearing, thinking, wishing or summarizing to introduce the speaker's own view: 보건대, 듣건대, 생각건대, 바라건대, 단언컨대, 요약하건대. Formal speech and writing.

Forming it

Not productive with other verbs: ✗ 먹건대. 하다-verbs often contract: 생각하건대 → 생각건대, 단언하건대 → 단언컨대.

Examples

• 제가 보건대 이번 계획은 성공할 가능성이 높습니다.

  As I see it, this plan has a good chance of success.

• 바라건대 모두 건강하고 행복하시기를 빕니다.

  I hope and pray that you will all be healthy and happy.
