-ㄴ/는다면

if (hypothetical); -았/었다면: if … had (contrary to fact)

Level 4 · TOPIK II · intermediate

How to use it

Sets up a hypothetical or unlikely condition, often with 만약/만일. -았/었다면 imagines a past that didn't happen and is usually followed by -았/었을 거예요.

Forming it

가다→ 간다면
먹다→ 먹는다면
알다→ 알았다면
부자→ 부자라면

Verbs take -ㄴ/는다면 (간다면, 먹는다면), adjectives -다면 (좋다면, ✗ 좋는다면). For a real, expected future condition, -(으)면 is more natural: 집에 도착하면 전화할게요.

Examples

Compared with similar patterns

-(으)면 (G1-028) is the general 'if/when' for real or habitual conditions; -ㄴ/는다면 stresses that the condition is hypothetical. -았/었더라면 (G5-018) is a stronger, more regretful counterfactual.
