Korean grammar patterns › Level 2
-게
-ly (adverb from an adjective); so that (purpose)
Level 2 · TOPIK I · beginner
How to use it
With an adjective it makes an adverb: 예쁘게, 맛있게. With a verb it means 'so that (someone) can …', and the first clause often has a different subject from the main clause.
Forming it
| 크다 | → 크게 |
| 맛있다 | → 맛있게 |
| 듣다 | → 듣게 |
| 알다 | → 알게 |
For your own purpose with the same subject, -(으)려고 is more natural: 한국어를 배우려고 학원에 다녀요 (✗ 배우게).
Examples
음식이 식기 전에 맛있게 드세요.
Enjoy the food before it gets cold.
뒤에서도 잘 들리게 크게 말해 주세요.
Please speak loudly so people at the back can hear well.
Compared with similar patterns
-(으)려고 states the subject's own intention; -도록 is similar to purpose -게 but more formal; -게끔 is an emphatic -게.
