How to use it
'When, at the time (something happens)'. Use -았/었을 때 for an action already completed at that time (한국에 왔을 때). With nouns: 방학 때, 시험 때, 점심 때.
Forming it
| 가다 | → 갈 때 |
| 먹다 | → 먹을 때 |
| 어리다 | → 어렸을 때 |
| 방학 | → 방학 때 |
Not with every time word: ✗ 아침 때, ✗ 어제 때, ✗ 주말 때 → 아침에, 어제, 주말에. Always -(으)ㄹ 때, never ✗ -는 때 or ✗ -(으)ㄴ 때.
Examples
저는 스트레스를 받을 때 음악을 들어요.
When I'm stressed, I listen to music.
어렸을 때 시골에서 살았어요.
When I was young, I lived in the countryside.
Compared with similar patterns
-(으)면 is a condition ('if, whenever'); -는 동안 means 'during the whole time that'.
