-지 않다
do not, is not (negation of verbs and adjectives)
Level 1 · TOPIK I · beginner
How to use it
Makes a verb or adjective negative. The short form 안 + V/A is more common in conversation; -지 않다 is a little more formal and common in writing.
Forming it
| 가다 | → 가지 않아요 / 안 가요 |
| 먹다 | → 먹지 않아요 |
| 춥다 | → 춥지 않아요 |
| 공부하다 | → 공부 안 해요 |
With noun + 하다 verbs, 안 goes before 하다: 공부 안 해요 (✗ 안 공부해요). Use 없다 instead of 안 있다, and 모르다 instead of 안 알다. Not for commands: use -지 마세요.
Examples

I don't usually eat breakfast.
오늘은 날씨가 별로 춥지 않아요.
It's not very cold today.
